Grade Intermediate Uniform Requirements

For Girls:

  • Leotard: Black, sleeveless.

  • Tights: Theatrical pink ballet tights.

  • Shoes: Pink canvas ballet shoes with pink elastic.

  • Pointe Shoes Become Compulsory (With Teacher Approval)

  • Pointe shoes (fitted professionally)

  • Elastics + ribbons sewn correctly

  • Toe pads or ouch pouches (as approved by your studio)

For Boys:

Vocational Boys Uniform

Boys move into a proper vocational uniform, usually:

  • Fitted white or black ballet leotard-style top (tank or short-sleeve)

  • Full-length classical men’s tights in black or navy

  • Dance belt (compulsory from IF onward)

General Notes:

  • Brands: While Bloch and Energetiks are commonly recommended/approved, the RAD emphasizes clean, well-fitting, and appropriate uniform, so check with your local dance school for specific approved suppliers.

PLEASE NOTE

Pointe assessments must be successfully completed before a student is permitted to purchase pointe shoes. Pointe shoes may only be fitted and worn once the student has been formally approved by SSOPA staff.

Females Hair Style

Key Requirements

Classical Bun: A slick, classical bun is the standard and expected hairstyle for graded and vocational exams, generally placed at the crown or middle-back of the head.

Security: The bun must be securely fastened with a strong hair elastic, hair net, and numerous hairpins to prevent it from coming undone during the exam.

Neatness: Hair should be smoothed back from the face using gel or hairspray, with no part and minimal flyaways.

No Obstructions: The hairstyle must not obscure the candidate's vision or their body lines, allowing the examiner to clearly see the entire body and the execution of movements.

Males Hair Style

For Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet exams, boys' hair should be neat and tidy, kept off the neck, often slicked back or styled short, focusing on a clean, distraction-free look for exams, though specific styles can vary from a simple slicked-back look to neat short cuts that fit within the uniform guidelines, emphasising a polished appearance.
